Sokoto Police Command resumes Operation Velvet to enforce traffic rules

The Sokoto State Police Command has announced the reactivation of Operation Velvet as part of its renewed commitment to ensuring public safety, order and compliance with traffic laws on roads across the state.
A statement issued on Tuesday in Sokoto by the spokesperson of the command, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the operation will officially commence on Thursday.
According to the statement, the exercise will rigorously enforce all traffic regulations, with special focus on various offences.
It listed them to include tinted glass Permits, adding that all vehicles must possess valid permits for tinted glass.
The statement warned, ” All vehicles found without proper authorization will be sanctioned accordingly.
” The dangerous and illegal act of driving against oncoming traffic popularly known as “One-Way” will be met with decisive action.
“This violation remains a major cause of fatal accidents and traffic gridlock.
” All vehicles plying Sokoto roads must be duly registered with the appropriate authorities.
“Unregistered or improperly registered vehicles will be impounded while the use of counterfeit, forged, or unauthorized number plates is a serious offence and will attract immediate confiscation of the vehicle and prosecution of the offender.
The statement added that vehicles with covered, tinted over, bent, or otherwise obscured number plates whether deliberately or through negligence will be penalized.
“All number plates must be clearly visible and legible at all times.
” In addition to the above, other infractions such as reckless driving, overloading, non-compliance with traffic signals, and driving without a valid driver’s licence will also be strictly enforced.
“The Commissioner of Police Sokoto Command, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, emphasizes that this enforcement drive will be conducted with the highest level of professionalism, civility, and restraint. Officers deployed for this operation are under strict instruction to respect the fundamental human rights and dignity of all citizens.
£Acts of extortion, harassment, intimidation, or any form of misconduct by personnel will not be tolerated and will be met with severe disciplinary action, including prosecution where warranted.”
The command, therefore, urged all motorists to ensure that their vehicles are fully compliant with all registration and documentation requirements.
It advised, ” They should remove any covering or obstruction from their number plates immediately.
“They should obtain valid tinted glass permits where applicable and adhere strictly to all traffic rules, particularly avoiding “One-Way” driving.
