Sultan calls for sighting of new Moon of Muharram 1447 AH

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across the country to look for the new moon of Muharram 1448AH on Monday, June 15, 2026.
The call was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.
It said, “Monday, June 15, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH, has been designated as the day for the sighting of the new moon of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.”
The Sultan urged Muslims to look and report any confirmed sighting of the moon to the nearest District Head or Village Head for onward communication to the Sultan.
