SUBEB Constitutes Three Committees to Monitor NUT Local Government Elections in Sokoto State

The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, has constituted three committees to monitor the ongoing elections of Executive Chairmen and other officials of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) at the Local Government level across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.

The committees were tasked with touring the various election centers to supervise the process and ensure credibility, transparency, and strict compliance with the provisions of the union’s constitution.

The elections were conducted through a consensus arrangement organized by the Sokoto State NUT under the leadership of Comrade Murtala Muhammad Sokoto.

This followed the expiration of the tenure of the caretaker committees, in line with the constitutional guidelines of the union.

The consensus approach was adopted to promote unity, strengthen cooperation, and ensure continuity, with several officials returned for a second term to sustain their contributions toward the development of education across the state.

The Sokoto Central Committee, led by Permanent Member III, Alhaji Garba Muhammad Sarki, alongside four members, visited election centers in Sokoto South and Sokoto North, where the elections were conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner.

In Sokoto South, the National Representative of NUT Sokoto and Chief Returning Officer, Bashar Garba Guiwa, declared Bashar Muhammad as Chairman following a successful consensus agreement among contestants.

Similarly, in Sokoto North, the Chairman of APCON Sokoto Branch, Malam Muhammad Iklilu Abubakar, who served as the Returning Officer, announced Malam Muhammad Mode as the NUT Chairman after a consensus agreement among contestants and newly elected executive members.

Reports from Wamakko, and Binji, Local Government Areas indicate that elections in those areas were also conducted peacefully and without incident.

The committee covering Sokoto South, led by Permanent Member I, Alhaji Shehu Buda Badau, visited Shagari, Yabo, and Bodinga Local Government Areas, where elections were conducted smoothly and in a peaceful atmosphere.

In Shagari Local Government, a representative of the Local Government Chairman attended the election and commended the transparent conduct of the process and the emergence of capable leaders.

Zayyanu Abubakar was confirmed as NUT Chairman in Tambuwal Local Government, while Ismaila Ishaq emerged as Chairman in Sabon Birni Local Government.

The Chairman of Sabon Birni Local Government, Alhaji Ayyuba Hashimu Dan Tudu, also visited the election center to demonstrate support for the process and urged the newly elected executives to focus on advancing education in their area.

Permanent Member II, Alhaji Abdulkadir N. Gada, who supervised the Sokoto East Committee, confirmed the election of Malam Kabiru Muhammad as NUT Chairman in Gwadabawa Local Government, while Abubakar Yusuf emerged as Chairman in Kware Local Government.

In their separate remarks, stakeholders included the representative of the Sokoto North Local Government Chairman and Secretary of the Council, Alhaji Yanusa Garba Isa; the Principal of Basic Secondary School Tudun Wada, Abdullahi Muhammad; the newly elected NUT Chairman of Sokoto North, Comrade Malami Muhammad Mode; and returning officers from Sokoto North and Sokoto South, all commended the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, for fulfilling his promise to ensure a credible and transparent electoral process.

They described him as a committed leader dedicated to reform and progress.

They also called on the newly elected NUT executives to support the leadership of SUBEB by aligning with government policies and contributing meaningfully toward the successful implementation of the nine-point agenda of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.

In his remarks, the Executive Chairman, represented by Permanent Member III, Alhaji Garba Muhammad Sarki, urged the newly elected leaders to uphold integrity, honesty, and accountability, while remaining committed to government policies and programmes.

Director of Administration, Alhaji Tukur Abdullahi, and the Director of JSS, Malam Muhammad Rabiu Abubakar, also highlighted the dedication and commitment of the Executive Chairman in ensuring that the elections were conducted successfully as promised.

Members of the committee led by Alhaji Garba Muhammad Sarki include Director of Physical Planning, Alhaji Sanusi Bunu Talban Dogon Daji, as well as the Education Secretaries of Sokoto North and Sokoto South.
