Sokoto State Hisbah Board Bans Extravagant Wedding Practices, Acts Deemed Contrary to Morality

The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has announced the prohibition of certain types of innovations during wedding celebrations and other activities it considers contrary to good morals and proper upbringing across the state, effective from Monday 27/07/2026.
Among the things banned are: “See I Love” revealing clothes, Wazigidi music and DJ performances, overloading and the use of loudspeakers or amplifiers on “Adaidaita Sahu” tricycles (Keke Napep), indecent haircuts for children and youths, as well as extravagant expenses and excessive bridal trousseau/lefe items.
Speaking with journalists at the Headquarters of the Sokoto State Hisbah Board, the Commander of the Board, Malam Usman Abdullahi Jatau, called on the people of the state to give the Hisbah Board full support in order to ensure the success of this important initiative to sanitise society and promote good morals across Sokoto State.
He further stated that the Hisbah Board will continue to take necessary measures.
Observers, who welcomed the development, believed that the move would curb such obnoxious excesses during marriage, naming and other social events.
Similarly, it is expected that the action by the Hisbah board will encourage more spinsters to marry, as hitherto families were constrained by the biting and unscrupulous practices hindering the conduct of marriages among potential couples in the state.
A cross section of residents of the state who also expressed delight with the move, however, urged the Hisbah board to ensure that it is strictly enforced across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.
They also advised that the enforcement of the ban should cut across all social strata of the society, “not minding whose ox is gored.”
