Sen. Wamakko Commends Organisers as Nigerian Derby Horse Racing Ends in Sokoto

As part of activities marking the third anniversary of the administration of the Executive Governor of Sokoto State, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, the Nigerian Derby Horse Racing Association organised a three-day horse racing competition in Sokoto State.
The event, held at the Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko International Race Course, Durbawa, attracted prominent dignitaries, horse racing enthusiasts, and participants from across Nigeria and beyond.
Among those in attendance were the Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko; the Deputy Governor, Engr. Idris Muhammad Gobir; the Secretary to the State Government; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi; the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Muhammad Goronyo; members of the State Executive Council; and several invited guests.
The grand finale, held on Saturday, featured four major races: the Sultan’s Cup, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko Cup, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Cup, and the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Cup, with competitors vying for top honours.
Speaking at the event, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko described horse racing as one of Nigeria’s oldest traditional sporting activities, recalling its rich history in Sokoto State dating back to the administration of the late civilian Governor, Shehu Kangiwa.
He congratulated the organisers, participants, and guests on the successful hosting of the competition and encouraged the organisers to sustain the initiative in order to preserve and promote the country’s cultural and sporting heritage.
Senator Wamakko further stated that the Sokoto State Government, under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, remains committed to developing a modern and befitting race course that will compete favourably with similar facilities across the country.
The event featured the presentation of trophies, vehicles, and cash prizes to winners who emerged first, second, and third in the various categories.
The colourful ceremony attracted a large number of spectators, invited guests, and horse racing lovers, underscoring the growing popularity of the sport in Sokoto State.
