Sultan of Sokoto Urges Peaceful Coexistence, Says ‘Without Peace Nothing Can Work Properly’

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to promote peace at all levels, saying it is the foundation for development, security and religious harmony.
The royal father made the call on Tuesday in Sokoto at a two-day Conflict Sensitivity Training for Media Practitioners and Influences in Sokoto and Establishment of a Community of Practice (CoP).
Represented by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sámbo Wali Junaidu, the Sultan described peace as critical to national progress.
“This is a very important issue, because without peace, there would be no peace of mind. We should work tirelessly, day and night, to ensure that peace prevails within our nations.
” Without peace, nothing can work properly,” he said.
He added that peace must be taught to the younger generation.
Abubakar said, “So peace, peace, peace should be promoted at all levels so that our young, grown up children will understand the significance of peace and will also relate to their parents who are peaceful, so that the nation can move peacefully for the interest of the nation and for the interest of everybody, men and women.”
The Sultan of Sokoto , President-General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Isamic Affairs (NSCIA), noted that peace is also essential for religious practice and cooperation among citizens.
“This can only be achieved if people work together to operate and to help each other.
” Without this, you cannot even conduct your religion properly… so that the nation can move further and develop for the benefit of our societies,” he stated.
Abubakar thanked the organizers for promoting initiatives that foster peace within communities, government and across Africa.
The event also featured the Chairman, NUJ Sokoto State Council, *Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji*, who linked the call for peace to the role of the media.
At the 2-day capacity-building training for journalists, sponsored by the European Union and facilitated by Alert International, Comrade Binji said journalists have a responsibility to provide accurate and conflict-sensitive reporting, especially as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.
He announced that a Community of Practice will be established to sustain learning and ensure the training translates into impactful journalism in Sokoto and beyond.
Stakeholders at the event agreed that promoting peace and responsible journalism will be key to stability and development in Sokoto State and Nigeria in general.
