By Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has flagged off the distribution of two million packs of sanitary towels and back-to-school learning materials to girls in public schools across Nigeria.

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, performed the national flag-off ceremony on Monday, 12 October 2026, as part of efforts to promote girls’ education, improve menstrual hygiene management and encourage school attendance and retention among female pupils.

The Executive Chairman of the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, was among the 36 SUBEB Chairmen from across the country who attended the high-profile national event.

The ceremony, held at the UBEC headquarters in Abuja, brought together prominent stakeholders in the education sector, including traditional rulers, ministers, commissioners and other key education stakeholders from within and outside Nigeria.

The initiative is designed to address some of the challenges affecting girls’ access to education, particularly those associated with menstrual hygiene management and inadequate learning materials.

The distribution of sanitary towels is expected to improve menstrual hygiene and support the well-being of schoolgirls, while the provision of back-to-school learning materials will help ease the financial burden on parents and guardians and encourage girls to attend school regularly and participate actively in classroom activities.

The initiative also highlights the importance of collaboration among the Federal Government, UBEC, State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), development partners and other stakeholders in promoting inclusive, equitable and quality basic education across Nigeria.

The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board recognises the importance of this intervention in promoting the welfare of schoolgirls and strengthening efforts to ensure that every girl has access to and completes basic education in a safe and supportive learning environment.

The Board remains committed to supporting educational interventions and working closely with relevant stakeholders to improve school enrolment, attendance, retention and learning outcomes among pupils in public schools across Sokoto State.
