Sokoto Gov’t Debunks Report On Alleged  Abduction Of 18 Gamji Health Tech. College Students
From Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Government has debunked a report alleging that 18 students of Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, were abducted by suspected terrorists while travelling to Oyo State.
A statement by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, described the report published by Sahara Reporters as false and without any basis in fact.
According to the report, the students were said to have been travelling in a chartered bus from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, to Oyo State when the alleged incident occurred.
The Sokoto State Government, however, categorically stated that no student of the institution was abducted.
For the avoidance of doubt, Bawa clarified that the person reported to have been abducted is Halima Sokeni, a former student of Gamji College of Nursing Sciences, More Area, Sokoto State, who graduated as a midwife in September this year.
He explained that Halima Sokeni was reportedly travelling back home on Thursday, October 1, when she, alongside other passengers, was abducted in Niger State.
The government therefore appealed to journalists and media organisations to adhere to the ethics and professional standards of journalism by verifying information before publication, in order to avoid spreading false, misleading and potentially alarming reports.
