The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Niger, Alhaji Mohammed Mamman Nami, has condemned the alleged intimidation and harassment of a teacher by the Chairman of Katcha Local Government Council, Isah Baba Bida, over the teacher’s political affiliation.
Nami described the alleged action as an abuse of public office and an attempt to undermine citizens’ democratic rights.
He stressed that teachers and other public servants should not be victimised for exercising their constitutional rights to political association and participation.
The PDP candidate also expressed concern over the poor condition of a school in Kafa village, Katcha Local Government Area, citing dilapidated infrastructure and inadequate furniture for pupils and teachers.
He attributed the situation to what he described as inadequate funding of education by the administration of Gov. Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Nami, in a statement issued by the Media Directorate of the Muhammad Nami Campaign Support Organisation, said the state recorded an 82 per cent budget implementation deficit in 2025, while education received only 5.83 per cent of the total budget.
He said the allocation placed Niger at 29th position among the 36 states of the federation in education funding.
According to him, the allocation falls below the internationally recommended benchmark of 15 to 20 per cent of total public expenditure for education.
Nami called on elected officials and government appointees in the state to respect public workers’ right to political affiliation and refrain from intimidating or victimising them on account of their political choices.
He reaffirmed his commitment to an education system that protects teachers’ dignity, expands access to quality learning and provides equal opportunities for children, irrespective of their location or background.
He said improved investment in education was necessary to address infrastructure gaps and enhance teaching and learning conditions across the state.
