HOPE-EDU: SUBEB PARTICIPATES IN REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON STRENGTHENING EDUCATION STAKEHOLDERS’ CAPACITY

The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, participated in the HOPE-EDU Result Area 1 Thematic Regional Workshop (Phase 2) held in Kano State.
The workshop, which brought together Directors and Support Officers from State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) across the North-West and North-East geopolitical zones, was held at AMIINGO Hotel, Kano, with the objective of strengthening stakeholders’ capacity and promoting effective approaches to improving teaching and learning outcomes in Nigeria’s basic education sector.
The HOPE-EDU Programme, being implemented by the Federal Government through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in partnership with the World Bank, is aimed at strengthening basic education delivery and ensuring that Nigerian children acquire essential literacy and numeracy skills.
The workshop focused particularly on the Structured Pedagogy Package (SPP), an evidence-based approach designed to improve learning outcomes through the provision of quality teaching and learning materials, enhanced teacher training, and effective learning assessment and evaluation mechanisms.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Aisha Garba, represented by the Director, North-East, Alhaji Abdullah I. Jarma, described the Structured Pedagogy Package as an important instrument for transforming teaching and learning in the basic education sector.
She stressed the need for participating states to demonstrate their readiness to implement the package by 15 November 2026, noting that such readiness would be critical to accessing the first round of programme disbursements and, more importantly, to improving the educational future of Nigerian children.
In his opening remarks, the HOPE-EDU Programme Manager, Mr. Olumayowa Aleshin, urged participants to view the workshop not merely as another training exercise, but as an important opportunity to strengthen the foundations of basic education through collective commitment and effective implementation.
The participation of representatives from Teacher Professional Development, Academic Services, and Monitoring and Evaluation departments underscored the importance of a coordinated, whole-of-system approach to achieving sustainable improvements in basic education delivery.
The Sokoto State SUBEB reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives of the Federal Government, UBEC, the World Bank, and other development partners aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning and strengthening learning outcomes across basic education institutions in Sokoto State.
