COAS condoles family of former finance minister Abubakar Alhaji

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General W. Shaibu, has condoled with the family of the late Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing the deceased as a distinguished elder statesman whose contributions to Nigeria would be remembered.
In a condolence letter dated August 4, 2026, addressed to the deceased’s son, Honourable Aminu Abubakar Alhaji, Shaibu expressed “deep grief” over the death of the former Minister of Finance.
The COAS described the late Alhaji as “a kind, generous, and God-fearing man who lived a life of honour, dignity, and service to humanity.”
He added that the deceased “was widely respected for his integrity, wisdom and unwavering commitment to public service,” stressing that his “exemplary character and enduring legacy will continue to inspire all who came in contact with him.”
Shaibu further said the late elder statesman’s service to the country, particularly his contributions to fiscal governance and national development, “earned him widespread admiration across Nigeria and beyond.”
“His demise is a great loss not only to your family and loved ones, but also to friends, associates and the entire nation,” he said.
The Army Chief also described the deceased as “a distinguished elder statesman, a diplomat, former Honourable Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and an exceptional leader.”
He said the Nigerian Army stood “in solidarity with your family and all who mourn this irreparable loss,” while praying for strength and comfort for the bereaved family.
Shaibu prayed that Almighty Allah would “forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” and give the family “strength, fortitude, and comfort to bear this great loss.”
