Celebrating Our Newly Promoted Reader: Dr. Murtala Marafa
Dr. Murtala Marafa is an Associate Professor (Reader) of Economic History in the Department of History and International Studies, Sokoto State University, Sokoto, Nigeria. He holds a Ph.D. in Economic History from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
Dr. Marafa began his academic career at Sultan Abubakar College, Sokoto, where he taught between 2002 and 2009. He subsequently joined Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of History before moving to Sokoto State University in 2014. Through dedication to teaching, research, and university service, he rose through the academic ranks and was promoted to Associate Professor (Reader) with effect from 1 October 2025.
He has held several important academic and administrative positions, including Head of Remedial Studies Department at Shehu Shagari College of Education, Faculty Examinations Officer, Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Coordinator, Head of the Department of History and International Studies, Director of the Research and Development Centre, and Member of the University Governing Council representing the Senate. He is currently the Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts, Sokoto State University.
Dr. Marafa has served as Chairman, Secretary, and Member of numerous university committees, including the Finance and General Purposes Committee (F&GPC), University Seminar and Public Lecture Committee, University Ceremonies Committee, and University Accreditation Committee. He also served two terms as Treasurer of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State University Branch.
Dr. Marafa has published widely in reputable local and international journals, contributed chapters to academic books, and participated in several national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops. His scholarly contributions have earned him the ASUU Research Grant in support of his doctoral studies in 2019 and the 2025 TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) Intervention Grant.
Dr. Marafa is happily married and blessed with children.
