2027: Ex-Rector Umaru Ali Polytechnic,  Prof. Aminu Ibrahim defects to APC
From Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State has recorded a potentially significant political gain ahead of the 2027 general elections following the defection of Prof. Aminu Ibrahim, a former Rector of Umar Ali Polytechnic, to the party, in a development that could strengthen its mobilisation efforts and expand its political base.
The defection comes at a critical moment when political parties are intensifying consultations, grassroots mobilisation and strategic alignments ahead of the next electoral cycle, with the APC seeking to consolidate its influence across Sokoto State and position itself for the political battles ahead.
A Professor of Mathematics at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University,Sokoto, Prof. Ibrahim’s decision to join the APC is expected to attract attention within the state’s political landscape, particularly among stakeholders monitoring the movement of influential personalities, professionals and former public officeholders as the contest for political relevance ahead of 2027 gathers momentum.
Welcoming the former rector into the party, the Sokoto State APC Chairman, Hon. Haruna Sarkin-Gobir Adiya, described the development as an encouraging addition to the party’s political family and a demonstration of the importance of unity, consultation and collective commitment to the party’s objectives.
Adiya said the APC remained open to individuals who shared its political vision and were prepared to contribute their experience, ideas and organisational capabilities towards strengthening the party and advancing its programmes.
He stated that the defection of personalities with experience in public administration and educational leadership could enrich the party’s internal discussions and provide additional support for its mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the Chairman, the APC’s strength lies not merely in its numerical advantage but also in its ability to bring together people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives under a common political platform. He urged the new entrant to work with existing members to promote cohesion, discipline and a shared sense of responsibility.
Adiya further emphasised the need for party members to avoid internal divisions and focus on building a formidable political structure capable of engaging voters on issues affecting their welfare, including security, education, employment, infrastructure and economic development.
He said the party’s preparations for 2027 must be anchored on sustained grassroots engagement, constructive political dialogue and a clear commitment to addressing the expectations of the electorate rather than relying solely on political defections and public declarations of support.
Prof. Ibrahim’s entry into the APC also highlights the continuing significance of political realignments in Nigeria, where the movement of prominent individuals can influence party organisation, generate new alliances and reshape conversations about electoral strength ahead of major contests.
However, political observers note that the ultimate impact of such defections will depend on the ability of party leaders to translate high-profile endorsements into sustained grassroots participation, stronger internal cohesion and credible engagement with voters across communities.
For the APC in Sokoto State, the immediate challenge will be to integrate the former rector into its political structure while ensuring that his experience and influence, if effectively deployed, contribute to the party’s broader organisational and electoral objectives.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the development adds another dimension to the unfolding political calculations in Sokoto State, where the ruling party and its opponents are expected to intensify their efforts to attract influential supporters, consolidate their respective bases and persuade undecided voters.
The defection of Prof. Aminu Ibrahim therefore represents a fresh political development for the Sokoto APC, but the broader significance of the move will ultimately be measured by its impact on party unity, grassroots mobilisation and the electorate’s response as the race towards 2027 gains momentum.
