Tragedy struck on Sunday along the Sokoto-Gusau highway as suspected bandits allegedly ambushed and killed five police officers.
According to preliminary reports, the officers were travelling from Sokoto State to Zamfara State for a special duty assignment when they came under heavy gunfire from heavily armed bandits along the border corridor between the two states.
It was gathered that the attackers intercepted the vehicle conveying the personnel, a Zamfara State mass transit bus, and opened fire at close range, leading to the instant death of the officers.
The spokesperson of the Office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 10, Sokoto, DSP Abdullahi Faruk, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our Correspondent in Sokoto on Monday.
Faruk disclosed that the remains of the deceased police officers have since been deposited at the morgue of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.
He promised to provide more details on the dastardly attack in due course.
The attack has heightened fears among motorists and other road users, amid recurring bandit attacks along major highways in parts of the country, especially in the North-West.
