Shagari Commends Sokoto Govt’s Subsidised Grain Sales, Calls for Transparency, Accountability in Distribution

Former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Barrister Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, has commended the Sokoto State Government for sustaining the statewide distribution and sale of grains at subsidised rates, describing the initiative as a timely and strategic response to the economic hardship confronting households across the country.

In a statement issued by his Media aide, Musa Ubandawaki, Shagari said the initiative demonstrated the government’s sensitivity to the plight of ordinary citizens, particularly vulnerable families struggling to meet their basic food needs amid rising prices of essential commodities.

 He noted that making grains available to citizens at subsidized prices across the state was capable of cushioning the impact of food inflation and strengthening the purchasing power of low-income households.

The former Deputy Governor particularly commended the leadership of the standing committee set-up by the state government under leadership of the former Deputy Governor Alhaji Chuso Abdullahi Dattijo for giving serious attention to the welfare of the people through the intervention, stressing that government policies aimed at reducing the cost of food must translate into tangible relief for citizens.

Shagari further urged those entrusted with the responsibility of supervising and overseeing the sales of the subsidised grains to discharge their duties with utmost integrity, transparency and accountability, stressing that the responsibility placed on the officials was a trust on behalf of the people.

The former Deputy Governor warned that any attempt to divert, hoard, manipulate or unfairly distribute the commodities would defeat the fundamental objective of the government’s intervention, urging the state government to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure that every local government area received its fair share.

 He appealed to community leaders, traditional institutions and relevant stakeholders to support the government by ensuring that the commodities reached the intended beneficiaries.

He described the subsidised grain initiative as a commendable social intervention capable of providing immediate relief while broader measures to strengthen agricultural production, food supply chains and economic opportunities were being pursued.

He urged beneficiaries to exercise patience and restraint during the sales exercise, saying the commodities were intended to provide relief to as many households as possible.

Shagari therefore applauded the Sokoto State Government for the initiative, while urging the authorities to maintain strict oversight until the programme is successfully completed across the state.

He expressed optimism that, with transparency, effective monitoring and judicious distribution, the subsidised grain programme would significantly ease the burden on families and further demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the people.
