Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara on Thursday charged public servants to hold professional ethics and accountability in the discharge of their duty.
Lawal gave the charge at the swearing in of five newly appointed Permanent Secretaries into the state civil service in Gusau, Zamfara.
He emphasised the need for discipline, transparency and effective administration in the state civil service.
The governor congratulated the new permanent secretaries and described their appointments as recognition of their experience, competence and capacity to assume greater responsibilities in the service of the state.
He, however, reminded them that their elevation was not merely a personal achievement but a responsibility that would directly influence government performance and the welfare of the people.
According to him, permanent secretaries occupy strategic positions in the machinery of government, providing administrative leadership, maintaining institutional continuity, advising political leadership and ensuring effective implementation of government policies and programmes.
He urged the new appointees to familiarise themselves with the priorities of his administration and demonstrate commitment to improving governance and the delivery of essential services.
Lawal stressed that government policies and programmes must be supported by proper planning, realistic implementation strategies, effective resource allocation and continuous assessment to ensure the achievement of desired results.
He also called on the permanent secretaries to maintain cordial and professional working relationship with their respective commissioners and other political office holders.
According to him, while political leaders provide policy direction, career civil servants are responsible for providing the institutional knowledge, technical advice and administrative capacity required to translate government policies into tangible results.
The governor, however, warned that public service rules, financial regulations and other relevant laws must guide their decisions.
He stressed that personal relationships, external pressure or administrative convenience must not override established procedures.
He urged them to strengthen collaboration among ministries, departments and agencies to address the state’s development challenges, particularly in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, security, economic development and social welfare.
Lawal reminded the new appointees that as civil servants they must remain politically neutral in the discharge of official responsibilities.
He said that career officers were expected to serve the government of the day professionally and impartially within the framework of the law.
Lawal expressed confidence in the ability of the appointees to contribute to the development of the state, noting that their selection followed a process through which they demonstrated their capabilities.
He urged them to justify the confidence placed in them through quality leadership, integrity, sound administrative decisions with measurable results.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kulu Aliyu administered the Oath of office
on the newly appointed permanent secretaries.
