The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, has expressed displeasure over the poor attitude to duty exhibited by some teachers in public schools across the state.

The Executive Chairman, who was represented by the Board’s Secretary, Alhaji Mamuda Ahmad Wamakko, made this known during an ongoing inspection tour of schools under the Board.

The exercise was aimed at ensuring that teachers discharge their responsibilities diligently and uphold the principles of integrity, commitment and accountability to the trust placed in them.

During the inspection, the Secretary and his entourage visited Yakubu Muazu Basic Science Model School at about 8:30 a.m., where they met the headteacher and 35 out of the school’s 47 teachers.

Briefing the visiting team, the headteacher disclosed that the school had a total enrolment of 3,293 pupils and 47 teachers, comprising both male and female staff.

He also reported full attendance among the pupils on the day of the visit.

The headteacher further revealed that two teachers posted to the school had reportedly failed to report for duty since their deployment.

He also highlighted the school’s need for additional teachers, as well as more desks and chairs for pupils and teachers.

Reacting to the report, Alhaji Mamuda Ahmad Wamakko condemned the unprofessional conduct of some teachers who neglect their duties and responsibilities.

Lp He urged teachers to demonstrate greater commitment, discipline and fear of Allah in the discharge of their professional obligations, stressing the importance of safeguarding the future of pupils through effective teaching and learning.

The Secretary also expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of work executed by some contractors during an inspection of Junior Secondary School (JSS) classrooms covering JSS 1 to JSS 3 and primary classrooms

He consequently called on school heads to strengthen supervision and closely monitor construction and renovation projects being carried out by contractors within their schools to ensure compliance with approved standards and prevent substandard work.

He emphasised that school administrators have an important role to play in protecting public resources and ensuring that infrastructure projects deliver the intended benefits to pupils, teachers and the education sector.

Members of the inspection team included Director of Primary Services, Dr Aminu Abubakar; Director of Planning, Engineer Tukur Muhammad Yabo; Director of Senior Secondary Schools, Alhaji Rabiu Muhammad Abubakar; Director of Social Mobilisation, Hajiya Rabi Muhammad Gwadabawa; Director of Teacher Professional Development, Alhaji Ahmad Abdullahi; Director of Special Programmes, Alhaji Mahamuda Galadima; Deputy Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Hajiya Murjanatu Bello; and other principal officers of SUBEB.

The inspection tour forms part of the Board’s ongoing efforts to strengthen supervision, promote teacher accountability, improve school infrastructure and enhance the quality of basic education across Sokoto State.

Signed.
