SUBEB Conducts Surprise Inspection of Basic Tudun Wada School, Warns Against Absenteeism

By Bashir Rabe Mani in Sokoto

The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Alhaji Umar Nagwari Tambuwal, has intensified its unannounced inspection visits to schools across the state to monitor teaching and learning activities and ensure compliance with established standards.
As part of the initiative, a monitoring team led by the Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Mamuda Ahmad Wamakko, conducted an early-morning surprise inspection of Basic Tudun Wada School at about 7:30 a.m.

During the visit, the team inspected 13 classrooms covering the Junior Secondary School (JSS), primary and Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) sections.

The team also observed teachers conducting lessons, including Malama Misiratu Salawu, who was teaching an ECCD class, and Malama Hafsa Yusuf Makama.

The two teachers were among the staff found actively engaged in teaching and learning activities at the time of the inspection. The school has a total of 53 teachers.

The surprise inspection was aimed at encouraging teachers and school administrators to rededicate themselves to their responsibilities and reciprocate the efforts of the administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto in improving teachers’ welfare, including salary enhancement, regular training and provision of teaching and learning facilities.

Speaking during the inspection, the Secretary of SUBEB, Alhaji Mamuda Ahmad Wamakko, urged school principals and Education Secretaries (ES) at the local government level to take their responsibilities seriously and ensure effective supervision of schools under their jurisdiction.

He directed that school gates must be closed promptly at 8:00 a.m., in accordance with school hours, and that appropriate disciplinary measures should be taken against any teacher found deliberately neglecting his or her duties.

Alhaji Wamakko stressed that there was no
justification for teachers to absent themselves from duty, particularly given the commitment of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto to improving teachers’ welfare through better remuneration, regular capacity building programmes and other incentives.

He further directed that the enrolment of new pupils for the current academic session should be suspended temporarily pending an urgent meeting between the school’s School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) and SUBEB.

The meeting, he explained, would enable the stakeholders to develop appropriate strategies for addressing overcrowding and improving the learning environment in line with UBEC guidelines and standards.

Also speaking during the inspection, Director of Academic Services, Dr. Aminu Abubakar Bado, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Malam Umar Muhammad Sanyyina, and director Senior Secondary Schools , Malam Rabilu Muhammad Abubakar, expressed concern over some of the conditions observed at the school.

They noted that despite the substantial interventions of the SUBEB leadership, including provision of additional teachers, classroom furniture, teaching and learning materials and other facilities, there was still a need for stronger supervision and improved commitment to duty at the school.

They offered recommendations aimed at bringing about meaningful improvements in the administration, teaching and learning processes of the school.

In his remarks, the Head of the School, Malam Abdullahi Muhammad, acknowledged that some teachers had not been sufficiently committed to their duties and were occasionally absent from school without adequate justification.

He pledged to take corrective measures wherever necessary and ensure strict compliance with the rules and regulations governing the teaching profession.

Also present during the inspection were Board Member III in charge of the area, Alhaji Garba Muhammad Sarki; Education Secretary, Sokoto South, Kabiru Aliyu, as well as other Principal Officers of the Board.

The inspection forms part of SUBEB’s ongoing efforts to strengthen school supervision, improve teacher attendance and accountability, and ensure that pupils receive quality basic education in a conducive learning environment.
