The Postmaster General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Ms. Tola Odeyemi, has said the organization is being repositioned from a traditional letters-and-stamps institution into a modern logistics, e-commerce and digital services hub for Nigeria.

In her Goodwill Message to mark World Post Day 2026, Ms. Odeyemi said this year’s theme, “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities,” could not be more fitting for where NIPOST stands as an institution.

She noted that for many Nigerians, the Post Office still means letters and stamps, but NIPOST is also turning its post offices into service centres where Nigerians can access logistics, government services, digital tools and financial services close to where they live.

The Postmaster General announced that on 1st October 2026, NIPOST officially launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System to address the age-long challenge where millions of Nigerians have lived and worked at locations that cannot be found on any reliable map.

“For too long, a courier cannot find them, an ambulance struggles to reach them, a bank cannot verify where they live.

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is our answer to that problem,” Ms. Odeyemi said.

She explained that every addressable building in the country, whether a home, a shop, a farm, a school or an office, can now carry its own unique geospatial identity that identifies its State, Local Government Area, District and Area.

The system, she added, is backed by mapping and managed from the new NIPOST GIS Lab, and is the foundation on which efficient postal and logistics, emergency response, access to credit and sound public planning can be built.

According to her, that history is NIPOST’s pride, but the NIPOST of today and tomorrow is about logistics, e-commerce, digital services and financial inclusion.

“Our small businesses, artisans, farmers and online traders need a delivery partner they can afford and depend on. That is the NIPOST we are building.

“We are strengthening our logistics operations, investing in technology and working with partners so that a product made in Aba can reach a buyer in Sokoto quickly and safely,” the NIPOST boss stated.

As part of activities leading to today’s celebration, NIPOST conducted the Annual Universal Postal Union Letter Writing Competition for young people in secondary schools across the country. Ms. Odeyemi disclosed that the Service received over 3,109 entries.

She announced the winners, with the overall National Winner emerging as Olusanwo Precious Oluwasemilore. Joint second place went to Diyal Fatima Satzen Sulaiman of St. Louis College, Jos, and Muhammad Zainab of St. Louis Secondary School, Kano. Joint third place went to Kwapten Nitninaan Pamela of St. Louis College, Jos, and Oyelami Oluwanifemi Diamond of Hallmark Secondary School and Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, Ogun State.

The Postmaster General expressed profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, for their leadership and support towards Nigeria’s digital transformation and the historic take-off of the national postcode infrastructure.

She, however, stressed that no system or building alone will transform NIPOST, but its people, urging every member of the NIPOST family to take ownership of the transformation, put the customer first and continuously improve the way they serve.

To customers, she said: “Thank you for standing with us. Your feedback keeps us honest and your expectations push us to do better. We will keep working to earn your trust, every single day.”

Ms. Odeyemi said NIPOST’s vision is clear: to build a NIPOST that is modern, efficient, customer-focused, inclusive, commercially sustainable, digitally enabled and trusted by Nigerians.

“One Postal Network means one network connecting our communities, businesses and government, and linking Nigeria to Africa and the rest of the world.

*From that network comes infinite possibilities: possibilities for trade, e-commerce, entrepreneurship, innovation, job creation, financial inclusion and national development,” she added.

She wished the entire NIPOST family and postal workers everywhere a happy World Post Day 2026.
