PDP Faces New Setback As Kaduna Guber Candidate, Other Chieftains Dump Party
The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections in Kaduna state, Hon. Isa Ashiru alongside Senator representing Kaduna North Senatorial District, Sen. Ibrahim Khalid Mustapha has dumped their party.
Amongst other members who dumped the party include, members representing Soba Federal Constituency, Hon. Suleiman Yahaya Richifa, Hon. Sabitu Ibrahim Kudan, member representing Ikara Constituency, Hon. Al Hassan Mohammed and other top members of the party.
In their resignation letters dated between 26th and 27th of March, 2027, they all cited the persistent leadership crisis, rancor and divisions within the party, as reasons for their decisions to dump their party, the PDP.
The mass defections of the Chieftains of the party came a few weeks after the Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Sen. Lawal Adamu Usman left the party on the grounds of the crisis rocking the party.
According to Ashiru, in his resignation letter: ” after a careful reflection of the persistent internal leadership crisis, rancor, and divisions within the party, it has become increasingly difficult for me to participate actively as a member of the party.
” This decision is personal and taken in good faith. Please kindly accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation from the party (PDP).”
In his resignation letter, dated 27th March, 2027, Senator Mustapha also acknowledged internal crisis, unending court cases that have continued to bring disagreement to the party.
In his resignation letter, Honourable Richifa expressed appreciation to the party, while also thanking all the party faithful for their support for him, while Honourable Ibrahim Kudan expressed disappointment in the lingering crisis rocking PDP.
He said: ” the lingering crisis and court cases are so discouraging to my personal ideology, hence I cannot continue to be a member of the party.”
Their departure is a major blow to the PDP in Kaduna State, coming a few weeks after the appeal court judgement, restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognizing the PDP convention held in Ibadan months back.
Though, they are yet to announce their new party, but unconfirmed reports indicate that their moves are part of a larger realignment to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
