As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the Federal University of Transportation, Daura (FUTD) has organized and held a two-day capacity building training for the officers of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), Daura.
The event, themed “Vehicle Crash Worthiness and Road Crash Reconstruction”, took place on Monday, 30th and Tuesday, 31st March, 2026 at the permanent site of the University in Daura.
The training was to equip the partcicipants with knowledge and skills to improve on their already existing knowledge on road safety, understand vehicle crashworthiness and conduct effective crash investigation.
In his opening remarks while declaring the program open, the Vice-Chancellor, Hon. Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, mni, welcomed the officers to the University and appreciated them for honoring the invitation.
He said that the presentation should not be a one-way but rather two-way and should be interactive, saying that, it would improve understanding, thereby enhancing service delivery.
The Vice-Chancellor further acknowledged the pivotal role of road safety in preventing accidents, adding that the training was to add value to the existing knowledge of the officers towards bringing about safety in Nigerian roads.
Delivering his first presentation, the facilitator of the program, Engr. Prof. Ibrahim Rafukka spoke on the fundamentals of Road Safety, noting that the responsibility of the Federal Road Safety Corps is to prevent accident crashes in the country.
According to him, to prevent occurrence of road accidents, there must be three interactions between safe roads, safe vehicles and safe road users, failure of which might lead to accidents.
“Roads accidents kill people more than HIV/AIDS…” he argued.
The presenter also highlighted some major causes of road accidents which according to him might be as a result of environmental factors, road, human and vehicle or mechanical factors, among others.
He further highlighted the critical role of vehicle safety systems in reducing road crashes and fatalities, noting the importance of safety features such as seat belts, airbags, child restraints, and anti-lock braking systems.
According to him, poor helmet usage among motorcyclists, faulty vehicle components like headrests and ABS, and the absence of protective measures such as truck underrun guards and road guardrails are shortcomings that significantly increase the severity of crashes.
He urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to strengthen enforcement, improve public awareness, and ensure strict vehicle inspections.
