

Sen. Wamakko applauds PSN, seeks continued professional excellence

Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (Sarkin Yamman Sokoto) has commended the efforts of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), particularly the Sokoto State chapter, which has been in existence for two decades, for their vital role in safeguarding public health.
This was contained in a statement signed by Bashir Abubakar, Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to Sen. Wamakko, issued to newsmen in Sokoto on Tuesday.
He made the remarks when the members of the Council, led by its Chairman, Pharmacist Aminu Ahmad Biambo, paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Gawon Nama, Sokoto.
Sen. Wamakko described the pharmacy profession as essential to healthcare delivery, noting its critical role in ensuring the safe dispensing, regulation, and rational use of medicines.
He urged the Association to sustain its commitment to professional standards, ethical practice, and pharmacovigilance.
The Senator further assured the Society of his continued support in promoting public enlightenment on the dangers of illicit drug use, self-medication, and the circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines.
Earlier, the Chairman, Pharmacist Aminu Ahmad Biambo, stated that the visit was to express appreciation for the Senator’s unwavering support towards strengthening pharmaceutical practice in the state.
He noted that Senator Wamakko has contributed significantly to capacity building in the sector, recalling his sponsorship of over thirty students to study Pharmacy at the university level in order to address the shortage of qualified pharmaceutical professionals in Sokoto State.
The Chairman added that the organization intensifies public awareness campaigns on drug abuse prevention, proper drug storage and handling, and the risks associated with expired and falsified medicines.
He emphasized that the Association also organizes continuous professional development (CPD) programmes and sensitization workshops for Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) to curb the distribution of fake and adulterated drugs, thereby promoting a healthier society.
The chairman, called for the establishment of drugs information center in the state towards disseminating and getting data on the use of approved drugs.
The association later presented an award of excellence for the recognition of the senator towards their progress and development.
The visit was attended by a Senior Fellow of the Council, Pharmacist Ibrahim Binji, alongside other executive members of the association.
