Sokoto Governor sets up committee to probe scholars’ utterrances

The Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, has approved the constitution of an Advisory Committee to investigate controversies surrounding utterances by some Islamic scholars in the state that allegedly led to a breach of peace.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abbakar Bawa.
According to the statement, the committee will be chaired by Malam Yahaya na Malam Boyi, Sarkin Malamai, with Barr. Gandi Umar Muhammad, as Secretary.
Members of the committee include Malam Muhammad Isah Mafara, Malam Bello na Malam Boyi, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim Sa’id, Malam Lawal Maidoki, the Hon. Commissioner for Religious Affairs, as well as representatives of Izala from Kaduna and Jos, Tijaniyyah, Qadiriyyah, Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the Sultanate Council.
The committee is mandated to critically examine the position of Shari’ah on the issues raised by *Mal. Musa Lukawa* and advise government accordingly.
It is also expected to submit its report to the government within 14 days.
The government said the initiative was aimed at promoting peace, unity and religious harmony in the state.
