Meet Prof. Hadiza Usman Ma’aji, pioneer Northern woman to attain rank of Professor in Clinical Pharmacy

Prof. Hadiza Usman Ma’aji has made history as the first woman from Northern Nigeria to attain the rank of Professor in Clinical Pharmacy, marking a significant milestone in the region’s academic and healthcare sectors.
Prof. Ma’aji began her academic journey at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU), where she obtained her first degree. She later earned her Master’s degree from the University of Ibadan before completing her PhD at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
She has built an academic career around Clinical Pharmacy, pharmaceutical care and research, contributing to the training of students and academics while advancing knowledge in her field.
Prof. Ma’aji currently serves as the Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at ABU Zaria. She has also authored and contributed to more than 15 academic publications, with her research interests including pharmaceutical care for people living with mental health conditions and pharmacy education.
Throughout her career, she has held various leadership responsibilities and contributed to the development and training of students and fellow academics.
Her achievement represents a significant breakthrough for women in Northern Nigeria, particularly those aspiring to pursue careers in healthcare, pharmacy, research and academia.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Prof. Ma’aji’s journey demonstrates the impact of determination, education and sustained commitment to excellence.
